How to Parallel Park in BC

Parallel parking is one of the most common skills new drivers worry about during practice and road test preparation. The good news is that it becomes much easier when you learn a simple step-by-step method and repeat it regularly.

Step-by-Step Parallel Parking

  1. Pull up beside the car in front of the empty space. Leave a safe gap between the two vehicles.
  2. Put the car in reverse and check all around, including mirrors and a shoulder check.
  3. Reverse slowly and turn the steering wheel toward the curb.
  4. When your car is angled into the space, straighten the wheel.
  5. Keep reversing slowly, then turn the wheel the opposite direction to bring the front of the car in.
  6. Straighten the wheel and adjust as needed so the vehicle is centered and close enough to the curb.

What Examiners Want to See

During a driving test, the examiner wants to see that you stay in control, observe properly, and park safely. They are watching for awareness, smooth steering, proper speed, and safe distance from the curb.

Common Parallel Parking Mistakes

  • Going too fast in reverse
  • Not checking surroundings properly
  • Turning the wheel too early or too late
  • Ending up too far from the curb
  • Touching the curb too hard

Helpful Tip

Slow is your friend. Most parking mistakes happen because drivers rush. Move slowly and keep checking around the vehicle.

Practice Makes It Easier

Parallel parking is a skill that improves quickly with repetition. A few practice sessions with a calm instructor can make a big difference, especially if you are preparing for your ICBC road test in Kelowna.
